We have considered the concept of Universal Energy and Reiki Healing energy on the previous pages, so it may be useful to take a brief look at how Reiki originated and why so many people seem to be drawn to it, both as practitioners and clients.
Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive form of healing which uses spiritual energy to treat physical conditions without using pressure, manipulation or massage. However, it is much than a physical therapy and is better described as a holistic system for balancing, healing and supporting all aspects of a person’s body, mind and soul. It can be used safely to bring relief to those suffering from mental health issues, PTSD, anxiety and many more emotional or psychological disturbances.
In the West, when we talk about Reiki we are referring to the form of healing practice originally developed by a Japanese Buddhist priest , Dr Mikao Usui (1865 – 1926). Dr Usui reportedly spent many years in contemplation and study in order to discover how to heal. Some accounts claim that he taught students in a Christian Seminary and wanted to be able to explain how Jesus was able to heal the sick. This, however, cannot be the case, as Christianity was banned in Japan until 1873, well after Dr Usui began his Buddhist training. We do know that Dr Usui reported receiving the sacred symbols during a period of intense meditation and contemplation, and that he became convinced of the efficacy of what he had learned when he treated an injury on himself, which then healed almost instantly.
The system of Reiki that we are now familiar with in the West incorporates many of Dr Usui’s techniques and ideas. He incorporated many aspects of his experiences in Buddhist practices, martial arts, meditation and a powerful method of spiritual empowerment called Rei-ju into his teachings.
People are sometimes surprised to learn that you do not need to be a particularly spiritual person, or to have qualifications or special abilities of any sort in order to become attuned to Reiki. Level one Reiki often has a profound effect on a participant opening them up to the beauty of the world around them and giving them endless possibilities for sharing the joy with others. Many people do not wish to progress beyond level one and are quite happy to treat their own friends, families and pets, as well as themselves with this gentle form of healing. Others feel drawn to continue their journey into Reiki and become masters and master teachers. They teach others and attune them to Reiki by pacing the sacred symbols into their students’ auras, as well as providing support and guidance to new practitioners.
Dr Usui was very keen to spread his teachings as widely as possible, and passed on his knowledge during his lifetime to as many people as he could. Millions of people worldwide are now benefitting from this powerful form of energy healing, which would have pleased Dr Usui enormously. As his memorial states: “If Reiki can be spread throughout the world it will touch the human heart and the morals of society. It will be helpful for many people, not only healing disease, but the earth as whole”
